چکیده
Article history: Received 24 July 2017 Received in revised form 17 August 2017 Accepted 18 August 2017 Available online xxxx Water can trigger flash sintering of ZnO powder pellets at room temperature to achieve ~98% of the theoretical density in 30 s without any external furnace heating. The specimen conductivity can be increased by N10,000 times via absorbing water vapor to enable the room-temperature flash. The initial electric field must be higher than a critical threshold to lead to densification, suggesting bifurcation in kinetic pathways. This new cost and energy savingwater-assisted flash sintering (WAFS) technology can potentially be applied to consolidate other ceramic materials. © 2017 Acta Materialia Inc. 8YSZ sintering by flash sintering method and evaluation of process parameters
Flash sintering as a new sintering method for sintering of ceramic materials has been studied and effect of various parameter such as flash current density, time of flash and contact paste on properties of flash sintered 8YSZ samples has been investigated. Results showed it is possible to achieve high density in shorter time and lower temperature than conventional sintering methods. Samples cou...
متن کاملEffect of Current Density, Temperature, and Contact Paste on Flash Sintered 8YSZ
Flash sintering has been investigated as a modern sintering method through examining the effect of processing parameters such as current density, temperature, and contact paste on the flash sintered 8YSZ characteristic. 95% of theoretical density was achieved at 800°С in 30sec with a field intensity of 100V.cm-1 and a current density of 160mA.mm-2. Such relative density in conventional sinterin...
متن کاملThermal runaway, flash sintering and asymmetrical microstructural development of ZnO and ZnO–Bi2O3 under direct currents
DC flash sintering of both pure and 0.5 mol.% Bi2O3-doped ZnO at a relatively high activating field of 300 V/cm has been investigated. It is demonstrated that even high-purity ZnO single crystals can “flash” at 870 C. In comparison, flash sintering occurs at a substantially lower onset temperature of 550 C in ZnO powder specimens, indicating the important roles of surfaces and/or grain boundari...
متن کاملPromoting the flash sintering of ZnO in reduced atmospheres to achieve nearly full densities at furnace temperatures of <120°C
Using ZnO as a model system, a strong dependence of the onset flash sintering temperature on the atmosphere has been discovered. In the best cases, ZnO specimens have been sintered to >97% relative densities (with fine grain sizes of 1 lm) in 30 s at furnace temperatures of <120 C in Ar + 5 mol.% H2. The enhanced conductivities of ZnO powder specimens in reduced atmospheres are responsible for ...
متن کاملThe effect of composition on flash sintering parameters of varistors based on ZBS
Flash sintering is one of the latest sintering processes of ceramics, which has recently attracted the attention of researchers due to its high sintering speed and significant energy reduction. An essential feature of successful flash is negative temperature coefficient (NTC) semiconductor behavior. In this research, the flash sinter process of ceramic varistor based on ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3 (ZBS) ha...
